System overview

Hydraulic Brake Boost (HBB) is a braking assistance system that uses hydraulic fluid pressure to amplify the driver’s braking force, making it easier to stop with less pedal effort. Unlike traditional vacuum boosters, HBB draws pressure from the power-steering pump or a dedicated electro-hydraulic pump, so it works independently of engine vacuum — reliable in forced-induction engines and functional even when the engine is off. This makes it especially useful for hybrids and EVs, offering quicker assist and a more compact package than vacuum-based boosters.

Key advantages

Hydraulic pressure amplification instead of engine vacuum

Reliable operation with forced-induction and engine-off states

Quicker assist and smaller footprint than vacuum boosters

Well suited to hybrid and electric powertrains

Technical profile

Capabilities and technical values are program-dependent and must be confirmed against the applicable OEM requirements, vehicle architecture and validation plan.

Problems it solves

  • Solves weak brake assist when engine vacuum is limited or absent.
  • Delivers consistent boost across combustion, hybrid, and EV states.
  • Frees packaging space compared with a vacuum booster.

Typical applications

  • Hybrid and electric vehicles without steady engine vacuum.
  • Forced-induction engines with reduced vacuum availability.
  • Compact platforms needing a smaller brake-boost package.
