HBAHydraulic Brake Assist
Detects panic braking and raises hydraulic pressure to reduce emergency stopping distance.
Standards
- ISO 26262 development path
- ESC-integrated feature
- ABS coordination
- Pedal-force monitoring
System overview
Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) is an advanced safety feature designed to enhance braking during emergency stops. Sensors monitor the speed and force of brake-pedal application; when the system detects a fast but insufficiently strong press indicating panic braking, HBA automatically maximizes brake force to minimize stopping distance, even if the driver does not push hard enough. It works together with ABS to prevent wheel lockup and responds instantly without requiring extra driver input, making it a standard feature on most modern ESC-equipped vehicles.
Detects panic braking from pedal speed and force
Automatically raises pressure to full braking force
Works with ABS to prevent wheel lockup
Instant response without extra driver effort
Technical profile
Capabilities and technical values are program-dependent and must be confirmed against the applicable OEM requirements, vehicle architecture and validation plan.
Problems it solves
- Solves insufficient pedal force that lengthens emergency stopping distance.
- Compensates for hesitant or weak braking in panic situations.
- Shortens emergency stops while keeping ABS stability control active.
Typical applications
- Passenger vehicles needing shorter emergency stopping distances.
- ESC-equipped platforms adding standard brake-assist safety.
- Fleets prioritizing collision avoidance for varied drivers.
Technical profile
- Trigger
- Fast but weak pedal press detected as panic braking
- Action
- Hydraulic pressure raised to maximum braking force
- Coordination
- Runs with ABS to prevent wheel lockup
- Availability
- Standard on most ESC-equipped vehicles
